Barrier-free means built environments that take human diversity into account. A barrier-free environment enables diverse mobility on an equal basis. This also concerns taking human diversity into account in the design phase.

Avaava is an advocate of barrier-free design and an expert in the field. Over the years, we have carried out over 100 physical accessibility-related projects around Finland. In addition, we have carried out numerous physical accessibility surveys, training and consultations.

Avaava has been involved in barrier-free projects either as a designer, consultant or supplier. Avaava’s own barrier-free products, such as bathroom fittings and basins or signs and signage, represent the best in their field.

Barrier-free design is a sign that the environment is considered to belong to everyone. In a physically accessible environment, people and things move smoothly. Ease of use and approachability create a feeling of caring.

Physical accessibility surveys

In physical accessibility surveys we determine the accessibility of sites and premises for people with different kinds of mobility and functionality impairments. We conduct surveys to benefit the developers and designers of both renovation and new construction projects.

Our survey method is based on construction regulations and recommendations. Our surveys are based on the generally accepted ESKEH survey method. As a result, we compile a report highlighting any identified problem areas and solution suggestions.

Physical accessibility courses

Avaava’s physical accessibility courses include an extensive range of information about barrier-free design. The course content is customised according to the customers’ needs. For example, the course can be built around the physical accessibility challenges of an ongoing construction site, or the course content can be limited to only some areas, e.g., a functional seeing or hearing environment.

We can give a basic lecture lasting a few hours or arrange a full barrier-free design day where the participants can experiment with glasses simulating various visual impairments, use a wheelchair, or wear the Ageman suit for first-hand experience of what it is like to be old.

The lecturers of Avaava courses are the best experts in various fields of accessibility.

Barrier-free design & consulting

Avaava’s barrier-free design and consultation services can help with small and large construction projects. Accessibility consultation can be extensive, providing information support throughout the entire planning and implementation stage, or it can be advice that can be implemented quickly – for example, a survey of product options.

Avaava provides complete physical accessibility plans for building permits and offers design help as the work progresses. The design service includes finished images for the customer’s use.
